OpenBuildings™ Station Designer Help

DataGroup System

Included with this edition of OpenBuildings Designer, are these changes and enhancements to the DataGroup System:

Renamed DataGroup System tools

  • DataGroup Definition Editor is renamed to " Definition Editor " (followed by the active dataset name), and is accessed from the ribbon here: File (tab) > Dataset Tools > Definition Editor
  • DataGroup Explorer is renamed to " Schedules ", and is accessed from the ribbon here: Building Design > Data/Reporting > Data > Schedules ()

Define Sort Order of Properties in DataGroup Definitions

A new right-click option Define Order on items selected in the Definition Editor properties list box (right panel) opens the Order dialog which lists all properties assigned to the selected DataGroup definition. Controls are provided that allow you to select and re-order the definition properties (or whole property groups). Once saved, the new property order persists in the tools and utilities which use the definition.

Define Units for Decimal Data types

For Decimal data type properties, a new Preferred Units dialog allows you to define the units that are displayed for the selected property in tools and utilities which use the property. The preferred Units dialog is accessed in the Definition Editor properties list box by clicking in the selected property's Unit value field.

Bidirectional Editing of Catalog Instance Data in Excel

New Excel Exchange toolbar options in the Schedules dialog, allow you to export catalog instance data (Schedules) for editing in Excel, and for re-importing the edited data back into your Schedules. This is useful for importing externally generated schedules. Also works for catalog instance data in reference files.

Integration of Place Table in Reports and Schedules

The Place Table icon now appears in the Schedules utility (formerly "DataGroup Explorer"). Integration of Place Table allows you to take advantage of Tables for OpenBuildings Designer reports and schedules:

  • Reports, Schedules and Tables (R/S/T) can be placed in a DGN as intelligent graphical elements to be included as part of a construction document set.
  • R/S/T placed in a DGN need can be sub-divided into multiple tables and re-assembled. The R/S/T is maintained continuity as the table(s) are scaled adding/subtracting rows dynamically.
  • Bidirectional editing between the R/S/T and object instance data. Instance data can be edited in the R/S/T or in the object instance properties. R/S/T can be exported to Excel and Access and support output types such as csv and xml as well as industry standard reporting engines, such as Crystal reports and Cognos.
  • DataGroup data in Tables is accessed directly from the Schedules utility (formerly "DataGroup Explorer") with no CVS or Excel involvement
  • You can format headers from the Schedules utility (formerly "DataGroup Explorer") including multi-line headers
  • You can update data from the Schedules utility (formerly "DataGroup Explorer") to the Table element with in-place edits and edits completed in Excel.
